I pulled this object out of the ground at an old later 1800s farmhouse, near the gravel driveway, it was a good 8 to 10 inches deep. I let the homeowner keep it, so I don't have exact measurements, but I did tell her I would try to figure out what it was. The piece is about 3 to 4 inches long and about 1.5 inches wide. It is brass, and has holes for screws or something on the sides, as well as one in the middle. The bottom that you cannot see is smooth, the center screw-hole is angled for a counter-sunk screw (maybe). My first impression was maybe some kind of plate / step or something from a carriage or some horse saddle part, but I know nothing about those things so I could use some help. I couldn't find any writings or markings on it. Any ideas?
