What's the significance of 1960 and 1980 to Kennedy? Kennedy was elected in 1960, but by 1980 he's been dead for almost 17 years...

Not so novel...
Those coins are sold...or were sold...with the "collectible" angle associated with them. I have found a myriad of years from the bicentennial ones all the way into the late 80s. Sorry, but there is a reason why you found it CRH

I knew about the pre-'71 and the 1987, but what is the significance of the 2002+?

IIRC the 1987 was only minted for souvenir sets and not meant to be put into circulation.

My father gave me this Kennedy coin when I was a kid,
it's the only coin I ever saved, having no interest in coin
collecting until now that I'm detecting and have to work
for them.
It doesn't seem to be some commemorative, there are no
years except the year of issue. On the reverse it's
stamped with I guess the "artist's" name and year of
his "creation", "Alvin Hutson, 1966"
Nicely done though.
