Welcome, hunt where you can, ask permission just to be safe, and have fun. I bought the Equinox 800 and love it. I use the preset settings and do pretty good. Best advice I can give to learn the machine you have and try other ones once later.

Tips for places to hunt? anywhere you won't get arrested or shot. I'd recommend picking a small section of your yard and dig every thing that beeps. Pay attention to the numbers, but listen to the sounds. The sound has more information than the numbers. Where to hunt and what settings to use are going to depend on what kind of hunter you are. Clad stabbing in the park and it doesn't take long to learn coins from trash and be right most of the time. Relic hunting in the wilderness you seldom know relics from trash until you dig it. Sometimes I don't know relics from trash until I get home and the wife tells me.
