No experience myself detecting railroad tracks, but your question reminded me of someone's post and pics from about a month ago -

rail road locks.... seen a few of them posted on here....

been to many rr and still haven't found one... definitely on the bucket list...

Yep, railroad locks, uniform buttons, date nails, lots of cool collectible stuff can be found there.

In my experience there can be a lot of iron plates. Be sure your settings can handle them, most detectors can give them a high tone.

Old depots and train yards would be good I'd think. Not so sure about old track lines.
