First off. Check out the following link HERE on the forums >> http://metaldetectingforum.com/showthread.php?t=639

Check with your local rules and regulations as to weather metal detecting is allowed where you might wanna hunt.

Also to start off work your own yard first. Learn how to dig a "Plug" and replace it leaving as little sign as possible you were even there. Throw trash away NOT back in the hole.. LOL. Secondly. Maybe start off in the "play grounds" under and around swings, monkeybars, etc etc. Most of these spots have pea gravel, sand, wood chips or ground up car tires therefore making finding and recovering objects very easy without digging up grass. Turn your sensitivity way down when close to the metal pipes for the equipment to minimize their "ping". After that. Maybe hit the sandy parts of the beaches, again, no grass digging needed. Also. Try a "coin test" in your own yard. First make sure no objects are under your detector so as to interfere with your signal of the known coins. Qtr, dime, nickel and penny. See how they read on your machine. Maybe bury them one at a time about 8" down and see how it reads them then dig them up. Do you have a "pin pointer"? If not check out http://www.harborfreight.com/metal-detector-97245.html Affordable and I started with this one. Works fine till you get better and need a better one. Hope this helps and feel free to ask ANY questions you may have. Good luck and cant wait to see your finds.
