Default AT Pro Iron Audio

Can someone explain to me how I should be using the iron audio feature on my AT Pro? I have only messed around with it a bit and I guess I don't really see the benefit. I am mainly a coin shooter and don't want to hear every piece of iron in the ground. Also, in spots like my yard where there are a LOT of buried nails, all I hear with the iron audio on are constant low grunts. I definately don't see the benefit in high trash areas, unless going insane is your idea of fun. Currently I run in Pro Custom with everything below 50 notched out. I want to maximize my potential with the AT Pro and make sure I am not limiting my capabilities with iron audio off. Am I missing something???

I only use Iron audio to check questionable targets in fairly clean ground, It will give a growl sound on iron when sweeping & stay solid on a coin or good target, I also switch it on for a few seconds to find out how much iron is in the ground at a particular spot when I'm hunting.. Those are pretty much the only times I use iron audio..

Lightningjack pretty well has it pegged. I run with it off until I get one of those jumpy signals, or a high tone that seems bigger than it should by the VDI. If you have a good target in the hole with, or in close proximity to iron, you can hear the iron coming in and separate the sound of the good target. I would recommend not notching out that high though. You will miss a lot of good small targets. Especially earrings and very small rings that often come in well below 50. Honestly I don't notch out anything, set the iron disc. at 30 max, and let it chatter away. Those good ones will catch your ear after a while. Good luck and HH!

I prefer NOT discriminating iron at all. I like to hear everything that is there and it's easier to find the tweets that are being slightly masked by the iron. I am mostly a coin shooter as well and with not notching out iron I have been able to find some good coins right next to or even touching iron junk.

Pro Zero with Iron audio off (Except after checking the content of the ground's im on) and 0-40 discrimmed. I typically spend 3+ hours when I get out and even with the headphones turned way down it still bothers my ears after so long. I don't like loud speakers and the like. I want my ears when I get older to still work. If I'm at the beach tho everything is wide open unless iron is too much, Then I'll discrim a bit.

Impressive IH count to other copper ratio!

Just like others said all ready, use iron audio on the questionable signals. Especially the 98+ vdi signals that often turn out as deep large pieces of iron. You will eventually learn how to inch and scrape the target(that's how I imagine it in my head) to help tell good targets from junk in close proximity. I am still learning something new about this every trip and it is very exciting when I can call out "iron beside possible good target" and I pull a coin out right before or after a nail.

Certain iron targets will grumble and bark at you in iron audio.

I just posted this link in another thread but it fits here as well. It demonstrates how with the Iron audio turned off a bottle cap will make the exact same sound as a coin. With the iron audio on it will have a low chirp at the beginning and the end of the tone for the bottle cap and the coin is a clean tone. It is an interesting video.

Yep! Steve Moore from Garrett who I have had the pleasure of hunting with a few times does an EXCELLENT presentation of it on Garrett's site.

Also have footage of me hunting with him and finding a cannonball.

Usually only use it on questionable targets, though the foil minefield I'm searching right now I leave it on, listening for tones with out a crackle.

Never use it, I never notch anything out either. The cut off sounds from notching distract me more than anything.

Balls to the wall and any sounds that stand out get my attention.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will stick with what I am doing by not using the iron audio except now I do switch it on when I have an iffy signal.

I see the benefit of not digging bottle tops, considering when your looking for the sweet spot those bottle tops are a bloody niusance.

When im coin shooting with the at pro though i notch out everything below 80 and full discrim and even notch out the top slot so im looking at dimes and quarters only..its pretty selective but when your doing an initial scan it tells you nobody has scanned that area when the quarters and dimes are all left there...in 2 hours got more then $10 in coins in half a field.

Now when it comes to gold hunting i open it up and descim out and keep the aduio going for the same reason..im not going to be digging bottle tops and other almosts all day long....its bad enough with foil, pull tabs and those silver inner bottle tops that dont give a low grunt on the edges

I rarely use it of late. I hunt in pro zero 30, manual ground balance, and one bar of max sense. Most of the time (but not always) I can distinguish a bottle cap from a coin in this set up. The cap doesn't give as clean of a sound. I probably need to revisit the videos and see if there is something I am missing.
