Got a newb question: I'm thinking of taking my ATP for a swim
in False River in New Roads, LA. It used to be part of the MS
River long ago. The bottom is sandy/muddy so Im curious as to
how items settle in this type of substrate over time. I've hunted
along the bank of the Amite River and it seemed that most targets
were burried alot deeper in the sand than if they were in dirt away
from the water. I'm guessing the constant flow of water continually
turns the sand over burrying anything with a little weight. Does
anyone have experience hunting this type of substrate? I'm sure with
the river's history and recreational use, there's some good stuff to be
found. Question is, how deep is it buried?

Rivers are an interesting place to detect. Because of current changes things get covered and uncovered all the time. I hunt a river here but NOT with a detector. The sand and silt move each day and you can find some interesting things.

Look at the river and try it. Then go back again in a week or two and see if it has less or more sand in the spot you detected. Maybe drive in a stick with marks on it to see if there is a change. Chances are it will sometimes be thick in sand and others very thin. A log upstream or any other obsticle will change the way the bottom is formed.

What Scuba Dude said. ^

Find some rocky bottom where you get targets and hunt it and mark where you were. 2 weeks or 2 months later you may be seeing totally different bottom conditions in the same spot.
