Hello All !

Please let me know your thoughts on this one ? :?:

I'm sure this has been discussed here ? However what does everyone do about

those 2' - 3' wide lawn strips between street curb & sidewalk ? Do you ask the

nearby home-owner for permission ? OR Do you just start detecting the area ?

I've seen countless "Grass Strips" just begging me & my detector , yet I've

ALWAYS been hesitant to just park & start detecting ..... I don't want

someone to run out of their house with a shotgun!

What , In your opinion is the BEST way to approach this ????? :wow:

Thank You for any & all replies on this !

I have been dtecting for 2 years going on my 3rd. I learned the ins and outs of my At Pro on the curb strips on my block. I found 10 rings just around my house in those strips. I always go after 10pm to avoid confrontation, it has worked well for me, with the exception of 1 person calling the police to complain. They didn't look hard for me as I was able to make it back home without any issues.

More commonly referred to as "curb-strips or curb strip hunting"
either in front of residential homes,
or right in urban downtown off of main street USA,
These small plots of land can & do hold a lot of treasures,
that have been over looked & hidden or missed by other detectors for years
You should check your local laws or city codes, about the right to detect them.
some towns are "fair game"
but many home owners say different :oldguy::dontthinkso:
It's best to ask first.
That can sometimes lead to a virgin backyard :digginahole:
I like the curb strips in front of older big houses (pre 1950)
that probably had several wild kids through-out & over the years,
Just imagine....all the foot traffic, kids playing up and down those sidewalks,
raking the leaves, shoveling the sidewalk, making snow forts,
lemonade stands, bicycle crashes, kid fights.
people parking cars getting in and out them, for years...
A friend said it like this,
Either on a curb strip, or in a lawn off the sidewalk going up to a house...
Let's just say a house is 90 years old.....
It has had 3 different families that have lived in that house for 30 years/ family
Each family has had 4 members each....(3x4=12)
Now, let's say just 1 member of each family (1x3=3)
lost & dropped 1 coin every other month for every year while they lived there....
That would be... 6 coins/yr by "ONE" person x 30 years = 180 coins,
multiply that by the 3 families =540 coins, in 90 yrs of that houses' lifetime
Maybe those numbers low or high,
as that some people are careless with pocket change,
and that others are more thrifty....
but, you see the logic ..........
What of other people that have visited the home,
a salesman, the mailman  a paper boy, the Avon lady,or uncle eddy,
or the kids that ran in and out the door all summer long in '62 ?

If it's not maintained to a high standard i.e if it doesn't look like the owners put a lot of effort into making it presentable, then I'd just say hunt it. Make sure your plugs are neat, take your rubbish with you and if someone hassles you, just move on.

You should always, as a general rule in any location, ask for permission.

Most curb strips actually belong to the township meaning they are technically public land. However in some cases (my home included) the home owner owns the curb strip and they take care of it like their lawn. If you started digging up my curb strip you can bet I'd be out there to have a discussion with you :)

Just did a forum search as I remember this being discussed before, ....

GKL is right: This is a subject that comes up quite frequently on any md'ing forum. Just do various key-word searches on md'ing forums, and you'll find no shortage of opinions on the subject.
