My wife and I are wanting to begin Detecting. Don't want to start out with too cheap a model that we become frustrated. $200-$250 with headphones, etc. Want ground source adjustments for use in mountain areas, wet sand and river basins. Gold, silver, coins, etc.

I've been a VERY casual detectorist for about three years now, and have been sort of blundering along the beaches with my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. It did okay, but was by no means the best detector. I've recently taken up relic hunting in farm fields and sites, and have upgraded to a Teknetics Eurotek Pro with the 11" DD coil. You can get it with the standard coil for about 215 bucks, and I have to say it's a killer machine. I have a friend that uses the Garret Ace 250, and it's an awesome machine (It's what I wanted originally). I ended up going with the Eurotek because of it's super handy numerical display (I think it makes things easy to identify), and it's cool how you can set iron to sound quieter than other metal, so if you are hunting for relics, you can avoid a lot of nails. :)

The Timeranger is the only one you listed that comes with any Ground Balance feature at the price you stated.
Even that is unusual, you usually have to get into a higher price point to get that on most brands.
Many of us start out with entry level units that have a preset GB and still do fine, being able to use that feature and hunt at optimum levels is nice but not necessarily needed all the time at every site.

If you are going to get a screen you might want to look for some that have actual VDI numbers and not just icons.
The Timeranger has them but they are tiny, and as far as recovery speed some units are better than others.
The TR is slow in disc but faster in all metal.

Other popular units near the $200-$250 price with VDI numbers are the Ace 300, the Fisher F22, and the Teknetics Euro Tek Pro.

Here is one that many started with and love from one of our sponsors.
Notice the package...a detector, 2 coils, headphones and even a cheap handheld pinpointer that isn't great but better than nothing.
I used this one for three years in both good and bad soil at many kinds of sites and did extremely well...never regretted that purchase.

I like the extra new features with the New Ace 300
It is in your price range
The 200 doesnot have a pinpointer on the detector and the 250 doesnot have a VDI # scale on the display box
any questions give me a call or order on line
thanks

If you can find a Fisher F2 that's what I would go for. I heard that they were going to quit making them. I liked the one I had better than my Ace 250. I wish I still had mine. You can't adjust the ground balance but I never had any problems with it.
