Golden Acorn help

Found this the other day in central Texas. Gold gilt or plated. Looks like a clip, maybe a sock garter? What do you think?

It appears to be a suspender clip or garter clip.
Notice that the patent date is actually Nov. 17, 1896 - that's how they did it back then.
A patent search should find it.

Whaaaat. I would have never thought that. Pulled the patent search with that date and found this:

William Alexander Johnston
Patent filed November 17th, 1896
Improvements in Cases or Holders for Spectacles, Pencils, Pens, and other Articles
(no scanned photo or other information :()

Thanks for the comma revelation. That will help me with future finds for sure!
