im thinking about getting a minelab 800 for hunting around the st louis mo area .Is it too much detector for a beginner ?

No, I think it is easy as plug and play with the pre-set modes and get great results too. And later as you get to understand it more, you can tweak the settings. I would go for it!

Welcome from Pittsburgh, Pa. IMO the 800 is a great choice, user friendly. Just use factory programs to start. Park 1 is what a lot of people use. Also, Minelab gives a 15% discount to all Vets. Good luck and good hunting. Mark

Welcome and JAK is exactly right. Just got my first detector (nox800) and am only using the presets at this time. Keep it simple, find a tone, dig a plug. Good luck.

Welcome to the hobby and to the Friendly Forum from Wisconsin's tundra. If you take the time to learn that machine it will more than fulfill your needs. Trapper
