What, if any, is the difference between a PM and a notification? I've gotten both, but not all are stored in my PM "file", which makes it difficult to refer and respond to them later, after opening them.

I believe the notification is referring to a post made on the page that you go to when you click on your name.

A notification is that someone posted to the thread on your profile page.
Different than PM's.
Different than PM's.

PM is a message from one member to another notification is letting you know someone else has posted to a thread you posted to. Howard
In addition to a PM, there is the Visitor Message way of sending a Forum member a message. If you have your "notification" turned on, you will get a e-mail notification of both a PM and a Visitor Message.
