Not exactly a button...

I found this "button" today at an old abandoned house. It is an Excelsior "button", but it doesn't have shank on the back and has four loops on the sides. Anyone know what these would have been used for on a uniform? (And why is this the second civil war era New York Excelsior button I've found in Michigan??) (Did soldiers trade buttons before they went home??)

I never washed off the back to see the maker because I ended up giving it to the homeowner after he told me his grandfather served in the civil war... but I'd like to tell him what exactly it is.

Back in the day, those were used as links in a woman's belt. They used eagle buttons and state seals. I may be mistaken about the dates, but I want to say the 1930s.

No on being repurposed, they were made this way for the purpose of being a patriotic ladies belt. Many were though made using original button molds. I believe they were in fashion in the 1870’s-90’s.

Thanks

Excellent ID, thank you... and perfect picture. Easier on the soul now to have given it away (rare to find CW stuff up here), but now do I go back and tell him??
