Found this costume jewelry heart locket. Think it's 8 or 9 karat gold plated. Didn't realize gold went that low on the karat scale. Was reading internet that said costume jewelry don't go above 10 karat.

A lot of the (gold) jewellery I find is 9ct (often marked as 375). It's very common in Australia.

I've seen many "costume" jewelry pieces marked as gold plated in 14K and 18K too. How do know your locket is plated; and in 8 or 9K gold?

Is it 8 or 9 karat.

Dear farigist, I really don't know if it is 8 or 9 karat gold, I'm just guessing. I've used my electronic gold tester which is 10, 14, and 18 karat gold and that came back negative. Then I used a acid scratch stone and the lowest acid test said if the liquid desolves at 10 karat that it is lower then 10 karat. I was also reading on internet and it said costume jewelry never goes above 10 karat. I used a Walmart gold cleaning solution on the locket and it created spots on it where I could see silver underneath. So bottom line is I think it's 8 or 9 karat. By the way is there a way to test for 8 or 9 karat?? Thanks Justin
