this is around the size of a quarter but heavy metal of some kind, any ideas what it might be?

That bullet looks to have hit something hard a glancing blow, or could maybe have been fired at and split on a axe blade. You could have a Annie Oakley!

Looks modern. Judging from the pattern on the paper towel I'm guessing .22 and from the deformation I'm saying long rifle. Can't say about the age.
