Hi.

I found this axe head on a property, in Connecticut, that dates to 1754. I do not know anything about axe heads at all, so hopefully someone can give me some more information. I have been scouring the internet for information, but unfortunately I have not found anything about axe heads with a butt-seam.

The main question: How old could this be? Is there a way to determine age of axe heads?

The axe head is about 6.5 inches long. The butt side is ~3.25inches. It weighs about 3lbs 2oz. The axe head shape is what appears to be a "Connecticut" shape. The butt side has a seam.

Thanks for the help!

The seam means it was made on an anvil and not cast. I have dozens of axe heads and only one has that seam. That axe head dates to the mid 1700s.

These axe heads were a flat piece of iron that was folded over to make the head. Nice find

Given it's current state, if you put that in a bucket of vinegar, there wouldn't be much left. I say just hang it on the wall and maybe he gets a buddy later.
