8 inches down - no clue?!!

Hello found this in a field about 8 inches down in hard packed soil - was giving me a solid 81 penny signal on my AT Pro. As you can see it has a hole in the middle - and the edges all around are ridged like some coins are. It is about the size of a dime and I do not see any writing on it - I seen what may be an E near the center on one side but cannot tell if it is just marked up or if it actaully is an E. Anyone know what it is? Thanks!

Probably several things it could be, but my guess is that it is a wick adjuster off an old lantern.

I would venture a guess that it is a thumbscrew for removing a glass sediment bowl on a tractor carburetor .

I have to say that when I first looked at this the first thing that popped in my mind was that it was some sort of Bering.. I realize I don't see any balls but it sure has that look.
