Could it be the handle crossbrace from a shovel or some other implement? Does the plugged up part have a "woody" consistency? Shown below is what's purported to be a WWII trench shovel to give you an idea of what I mean:

I can’t find any pictures but I have seen that shape as a cast iron lever door handle. That would be for a small cabinate.

I believe the trench shovel is from WWI.

Could well be. Could also be from Aunt Martha's vegetable patch in Teaneck, New Jersey. Hence my use of the qualifier "purported." The website claimed it was WWII, but then here's another website claiming Fonzie was an alien..

I just used that image to illustrate my hunch about the style of handle.
