Help with an unknown brass find

Pulled this item from an area that was a hotel in the late 1800s.
It's about the size of an AA battery. One end is open and flared out with internal threads. The other end is closed solid, but an area along that end is deteriorated and open.
Any ideas? TIA.

I thought it looked like a small pipe fitting, but I can’t tell.

That’s a thermowell. The size leads me to believe it was used with a filled system with a temperature bulb. The item shown would be screwed into a pipe that you wanted to know the temperature. If the filled system failed for any reason you could remove the bulb without shutting down the whole system.
