you guys on the coast do you know if it is leagal to detect on the beaches from carmel to santa cruz.thank you for the info.

Yup, it's legal. The "Left Coast Gang" does it all the time.

Perfectly legal with few exception but the exceptions are both South and North of the area you mentioned.
Just stay out of the zones marked with "Keep Off" signs, take out the garbage and fill your sand holes.

From the So Cal beaches; these beaches are legal. Unless you try to hunt Camp Pendleton. (Not a good idea)
