Is the back identical?
Could you have it upside down? It could be an "artsy" fish.
Possibly. At first I thought the hole should be on top. But the more I looked at it, it resembled a whale with the hole being at the bottom. The outside edges have a lip that almost feels like a coin that has been pressed. I thought it may be some old fishing lead, wind chime, or jewelry. Definitely my coolest find of the day.

With the hole on top, it looks like a hatchet fish. If you put something in the hole does the fish balance?
Wind chime is a good guess.
I hung it on some thread to see what it would look like as a chime. The tail looking piece sticks up, so no it's doesn't balance. This thing is fairly dense. I don't have small enough scales to check the actual weight but I will be picking some up tomorrow. This was found in Montgomery Alabama.
