Using a concentric coil, both AT's easily distinguish the difference between a bottle cap and coin. Canadian clad coins bounce around 40's to 70's, with a sort of squelch sound. Hunting with iron audio set to about 35 in discriminate mode quickly alerts you to a coin. I just use my pin-pointer to locate the coin, then pop it up with a screwdriver as quick as I can, then move on to my next target. The concentric coil also has the ability to pick out coins in trash areas. I just raise the coil to about 4 inches in these areas.

I again, this year I bought a nice gold coin with my clad from Austria, to add to my gold coin collection. Been buying them for over 20 years.

My ring finds were down this year, as the forest fires west of Edmonton created so much smoke, that our beaches were basically empty this year! I did score a nice 18K gold honker ring weighing 14.2 grams. Because the beaches were empty, I did a lot of gold prospecting this summer to supplement my gold finds. When I do hunt freshwater, I prefer to hunt with the AT Max, large 9" x 12" concentric coil in true all metal mode, with the iron audio turned up to 40, to alert me of iron junk verses a nice clear signal, with a decent VDI number in the 50's for gold or 80's for silver.

Here's my silver and old copper finds. I love using the 5" x 8" coil in the woods. Hearing a nice high pitch audio, with a VDI in the 80's is just music to my ears! Again, I like to hunt with the iron audio turned on so as I can just focus on higher conductive targets, getting me silver or copper, and leaving the mostly iron junk targets in the ground.

My relics are limited in my area. It was initially populated in the mid 1800. No civil wars, so I just don't have sites giving up a lot of 3 ringers or mini balls. That's not to say they don't exist, as I do occasionally find them. There are some dump sites which have also given up some nice old bottles. Anyhow, here are the few finds from the woods or river finds from prospecting/digging gravel out of the North Saskatchewan River, which has it's beginnings in the Rockies and flows through down-town Edmonton. Like most large rivers, it was at one time an important way to travel to and from many locations with canoes. The Hudson's Bay Company had many posts in and around Edmonton.

I am truly blessed with this river, as it has given up many old coins, relics and flour gold. I bet the hobby of metal detecting and prospecting will extra add years of health and enjoyment out doors as well as good times shared with friend!

Below is the flower gold I got this year prospecting. I am going to dry the pan over night and weigh the gold in the morning!

Good post and congrats. Looks like you had a good year. In my area I prefer concentric coils, especially around bottle caps.

WOW, John. That's an awesome collection of rings. You kill it every year.

Thanks! Garrett detectors are excellent machines for coin and jewelry finds. I have found about 200 gold rings, over 1,200 silver coins and tons of clad. Garrett got it right for building and designing metal detectors at a decent price. After all, they have been building metal detectors for a very long time.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

Another awesome year for you John. Thanks for sharing.

An honest question though, have you ever used any other detector besides a Garrett?

Just curious.

How many days did you detect ?

Tom, this past year is the first year when I didn't track my finds. Last year, I did 82 hunts. This year was a little less hunting, as I took up gold prospecting, and probably lost about 25 days when I could have been metal detecting. My overall totals in all categories is also down a bit.I am in my mid 60's and surprised I still have some pretty good endurance. I am a cancer survivor, as probably many others on this forum, and really appreciate a good nights sleep from a good day of digging gravel or coin hunting.

Yes......my first was a Radio Shack, I had 2 Bounty Hunters, a Minelab Musketeer, a Whites Amphibian, and a Detector Pro Wader. I really likes the Garrett GTI 2500, and have taken a liken to Garrett. I stay away from the NOX, as it hates Canadian Coinage, however, the new
Anfibio is looking very interesting, as it can be used in bother water and dry environments. I am just not sure how well it ID's Canadian coinage. Using the Garrett's, I can easily ID our clad, better then any other machine I have used.

I don't think that any single individual influenced our hobby over the years as much as Charles Garrett. His dedication was evident in the various designs he produced and the quality each an every detector displayed both in appearance and functionality.

I've used Garretts in the past and would have no problem using any model in the Garrett lineup today. Other brands, makes, and models might just fit a particular individuals needs and preferences better but that is an individual decision based on personal opinion and/or taste.

It would be impossible of course for any manufacturer to produce the optimal must have detector to end all detectors. That fact then causes us buyers to have a wide choice in what we want to buy and use. A win situation for all of us that dig in the dirt.

Garrett and the AT line in particular then is of course a perfectly capable design built by a company with a long history of customer service that is today one of if not the best in the business.

I don't have a Garrett in my stable today but I would not hesitate adding one that fit my personal requirements, (keyword personal).

Once in a while a thank you trumps (no pun intended) criticism and can indeed turn a frown upside down. So, thanks Charles Garrett...

If I sound too much like an Optimist it's because I'am which began the day I understood the difference between perception and reality. Just like the rest of us, I know that next signal I hear (or see) could be that killer find to end all finds.:D

Yes, Charlie did a lot of the pioneering for the hobby. He was well known for his ability to design a circuit which prevented constant drift, a serious problem all the first metal detectors had. He and I actually exchanged some letters many years back.

His company was always well known for it's generosity for donating metal detectors and equipment to rallies and clubs.

I got my At pro in 2010 maybe it came to Canada in 2012???

Mmmmm, has it been that long? Somewhere close to it's release, I was in a hospital having surgery for prostate cancer. That terrible embarrassing prostate exam saved my life!

I've got to admit as far as my preferences goes, the AT Pro is my top choice.

Its hard to find both smooth/stable & deep. The AT Pro nails it.

It's my go-to machine for coin and jewelry hunting. Once you learn the audio, and VDI numbers, you leave a lot of junk, including bottle caps in the ground. The MAX has more depth (depth isn't everything) so I prefer to use it for water hunting or relics.

At pro is my top choice for sure, for me I just understand the tones and icon and number vdi is a great combo to decide to dig or not.
