Old man here, moving from SoCal to Butte MT in a month or so. Done some gold prospecting, and though I have a detector, I never used it much, so consider me a raw novice.

I do not know a single soul in Butte with the exception I my real estate agent and that only on the phone. I am hoping to find someone in the Butte area to team up with. Please let me know.

One thing for sure...Do not introduce yourself or otherwise advertise to the MT Natives that you are from California! They HATE you guys! Coming into Their State and driving up the land prices, stinking up the clean air with pachouli oil and Starbucks frappachino breath!

You have to check your bumperstickers! No surfboards, peace signs, rainbows, Coexist etc...Cover them all over with NRA or Fishing stickers....

Remove all evidence and vestages that you are a Cali Transplant! You should consider listening to some Youtube vids from guys from down south to get your language squared away...actually, you really gotta get that squared away tight!

Choose a little town from down south to say you are from, preferably with a pop of about 300....Devise a valid back story as to why you are now here in MT...Just say, "It was getting too crowded, and I want to hunt for Coyotes and Wolves!"...Hell, you will have more gates open up to you immediately!

Practice, prepare, get a sack of beachnut chewing tobacco and make sure people see you eat it! Simply dump out the tobacco and refill the empty pack with a few tootsie rolls run through a pencil sharpener!

Drink your coffee black out of a styrofoam cups, get some beat up clothes from Goodwill and a Caterpillar or John Deere hat...Lose the LLBean and any designer tagged .....Dude, dont show up in a Prius or all of this will be for naught!...!..

Dont try to dress like a cowboy...not right now, not ever!...dress like a poor farmer...you might just be able to pull this off! Hopefully some other Californian whos been there a few years will notice you right away, feel sorry for you and give you some chewing tobacco and possibly even a Dog...

Learn as much as you can about chainsaws...specifically Stihl or Husqvarna..get one even if it does not work and carry it around for a few weeks everywhere...36" bar at least....anything shorter than that and people will know right away...

Frequent a little gas station or corner store run by Natives...pay with cash, buy at least a 6 pack per day of Natty Ice, and a pack of Pall Mall unfiltered...Even if you dont drink or smoke, Pay the Gate....Olfactory is also very important! You should go around smelling like woodsmoke, manure, diesel fuel, beer and tobacco...You get that right and you may blend in or at least go unnoticed for a few years...First impressions are important!.

Good Luck and Welcome to the Forum!

My cousin in Seattle asked me why I would want to go to Montana. Answer was easy:

1. It is NOT California.

2. Cheaper than Oregon. (I was born in Oregon) Californians has caused the price increases.

3. Less Socialist than Washington State. (I graduated West Seattle HS in 1969)

4. Fewer illegals than Arizona.

5. Montana is beautiful and still respects an individuals rights. I do not judge Montanans based on their current elected Congressman or Senators or their non-elected out-going Secretary of Interior.

Welcome Poppa J! I am over in Hamilton Montana south of Missoula. I don't do any gold prospecting (other than hoping to find some gold rings!) mostly coins tokens buttons etc especially silver. If you are over this way let me know and perhaps we can do some detecting this spring or summer. I know of a few detecting buddies in Helena, and Great Falls, but none from Butte. From what I've heard, the public areas in Butte have been hit really hard, but I would think private yards with permission will still produce many good finds for you!
