Has anyone ever tried this for removing dirt in hard to reach spots?

I remember reading an article by an archaeologist about how he cleans up pieces for the museum. From what I could tell, his method is mostly for dirt removal, not discoloration. He would freeze the object in distilled water, then remove, break the ice and repeat until it was as clean as it was going to get. The dirt sticks in the ice and the water gets into spots that are hard to reach.

i am doing it on some coins but i take them out of the water
the water soaks into the crude and breaks it up when it freezes

I just tried it on a wheatie i found yesterday. Couldn't be sure of the date. After freezing it and breaking it out of the ice, it is easily identifed as a 1941.

Dug a few coins late last fall in frozen ground and they came out looking cleaner than any I had dug before the freeze.
