That was shoe polish. There would have been a rubber topper with a slit in it on top.

Thanks! a couple of them have corks still in em. And then theres the tiny one! i have about 20-30 bottles id possibly be willing to give to a collector if anyone is interested near me! most are screw tops but have 5-10 cork tops, a cpl cobalt ones. I metal detect these old sites and stumble upon these bottles quite often, always pick up the interesting ones but now they are beginning to get in my way!
