British army royal engineer button

Please help date, value and explain how it ended up in West Virginia? Lol it has a nice green patina with some gold showing... I shared a pic of what it says and the meaning. The motto has been used since 14th century, naturally this ain’t that old lol. In small print in a ribbon shape it says royal engineer... any help or info appreciated. Can’t find a match online.
