I always carry the receipt for a detector I take abroad (saves trouble with your home Customs).
Should be no duty involved otherwise you would also be paying on your digital camera etc.
Police were a little iffy liking a small donation to their retirement funds but thats supposed to have been clamped down upon as they try to build the tourist industry.
