Can anyone offer any details on this item? I found it in the back yard of a 1908 house. The back reads "14KT Gold Plated on Genuine Bronze." the Front reads "The Great Seal of the United States." It looks like it would have hung on a ribbon. Could it be some sort of military item? Any ideas on age?

Thanks!

Did some checking and found few of those...or similar ones. According to them this is a watch fob. For example on ebay there are a bunch of similar ones for sale, both state seal and great seal ones. As for the age...well...easily same age as the house..imho.

Thanks Voriax! You are quite the resource!

Would it be a bad idea to throw this thing in the sonic cleaner at work?

Dunno for sure but it looks like the surface layer is flaking..or is it just dirty? Ultrasonic cleaner might cause more flaking thus pretty much ruining the item.

Personally I'd find what the original looked like. If it's just gold plated, sonic clean that baby and have it replated. Sell it on E-bay for $100 ;)
