Old 2 prong slip belt buckle. Age?

My friend found this yesterday in a long gone Gold Rush town. He says it looks aluminum and feels aluminum. Looks brass to me but his pic might be bad contrast. It rang up penny. Any guesses on age and or metal/alloy? I doubt it's a reproduction. Too remote of an area for that. I'm interested in knowing if it's 1800's or 1900's. Thanks for your help guys/gals.

I got to look at it in person. I believe it is silver.
