White's Spectra V3i

Earl,
The gain setting on the V.
That"s where folks go wrong mostly

The gain setting allowed seems to depend on EMI and the ground minerals-- and ground conditions be it wet or dry.

The gain setting actually has very little to do with overall depth-- meaning most of the time a gain of say 9 or 10 will suffice as long as your disc number is set pretty high.
You would be surprised at just how deep the detector will strike with say a gain of only 6.

The problem is knowing/ learning how high to run the gain.

And I don"t think a person really can ever run rx gain at 14 or 15.
There's a vid that shows a lot of what I talked about above.

I will see if I can find it and post here.

that could be

One problem as on my water machine Surf PI DF, I always pump up the gain, the machine has allsome depth , but if there is high iron or trash, a VLF is the choice, so guess I will try backing off the gain for stable operation on the v3i, thanks 4 the tip. AND link, Earl PS Interesting video, thanks again.

You are welcome

Now folks need to remember gain on V3i and sensitivity on etrac/CTX not exactly the same.

Meaning I can many times hear a deep target with etrac/ CTX with high sensitivity --- granted the detectors do false a bit more on iron

But the V3i running too high a gain--- can cause when over say a mid depth to deeper dime--- no signal or a wishy washy signal.

Don't forget the V3i has the disc setting--- this is more the equivalent to the sensitivty setting on etrac/CTX

The modulation on or off on V3i = the gain setting on etrac/ ctx

If I had to pick the 2 things where folks usually go wrong.

Gain too high
Use between 6 and 11 most of the time.

Recovery delay setting
Folks like to run this too high ( slower) setting like 90
Instead try 70
Makes the detector more swing speed friendly

Depending on your site's soil and hunting style-- filter
With fast humting 10 is best
For slow 5 is best and generally deeper

I hate modulation ON where deeper stuff is reported fainter/ lower volume

I want all targets to report strong-- hence modulation off
Besides the detector does have a depth meter

Took the Etrac to my honey hole today for a few hours. So far it hasn't sniffed out anything the V has missed, but to be fair the grass and weeds were fairly high making it very difficult to swing. I'll have to break out the mower a little later and try again.

V3i

I have had my V3i since 2012 and have put alot of miles on it. I have hit silver dimes at 8 to 10 inches. I would say the average find, even for old coins is 6 inches or less. Deepest coin this year (2016) has been a silver Washington at 8 inches and it was angled a bit. This was with a 950 concentric RXG 7. discrimination at 82, basically the stock C&J program.

I've read this entire thread and this is the best info u have given yet. It actually validates that u know how to operate your v correctly :).

I tend to agree tho with alot of what u say . I hunt with 3030's all around me . I can definitely hit what they do even on the deepest of targets but their signals are generally better . I would definitely dig it with the v too ,it just doesn't jump out at u like the Minelab units do .

On a site with a lot of shallow trash I would prefer modulated audio.
