Old Watch Housing?

Seems to be Brass. I assume it’s some kind of watch. Found at an 1880’s house. Any ideas?

Maybe a case for a compass. If it doesn’t open up it’s not likely a watch

It is a pocket watch case. It is for a key wind movement, it's wound by using a small key thru the small hole in the back. 1870's to 1880's timeframe. The front is hinged so that the hands can be set using the same key.

That ^ I’d go 1880’s or so tho.
