Maybe I'm dreaming, but could this be a Colonial copper coin? Maybe a half-cent?
I found it yesterday at an old home site. Home was from the 30's-50's. I found 20 Wheaties, a rosie and this coin. The town it is located in was founded in 1800.
It was found only 1.5" down, but the soil would have been disturbed when they tore down the house. After examining it thoroughly, and not being able to get any details off of it, I cleaned it up. Coin is also bent and dented.
Dimensions and weight are spot on for a half-cent copper. Weight is slightly over 5grams, diameter is 23.5mm. For comparison, it is about the size of a quarter, although from this photo it kinda' looks like a pizza pie pan.
I think I see some numbers... a 7 and a 3 or 8. I'm posting an enlarged photo of the area. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Dave
