I went down to a school yard to search around where the old playground equipment was located. I was hitting on lots of scrap and couldn't figure it out until I remembered that had a pile of ashes from the old incinerator when they built the new school and likely just spread them out.
I did find my second coin, a 1962 penny.
I've noticed the pennies so far are extremely corroded.
I'm thinking it may be due to the extreme rainfall and acidic soil in Western Oregon.
Also I figured out it probably isn't the best idea to wear steel toed work boots while using a metal detector.
