really depends on where you'll be using it and what type of gold has been found in those areas in the past. that determines what type of machines you should get overall. here are a few really good articles on gold detectors that should help:

Don't know your budget but when shopping, also take a look at the Tesoro Lobo ST. I've seen used ones go for good prices on ebay.
