I asked in a coin forum and they about bit my head off for wanting to clean a worthless coin. So I figured I'd ask here ;-)

The coin in question was found CRH'ing. It is a 1970 Cinqo centavos and almost solid dark brown. The features are hard to see (I'll post pictures later).

It can't be worth much (it was demonetized) so how do I clean it?

Is this the best way?

  • Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 tsp salt
  • Add tarnished coins and other brass or copper items
  • Swirl the solution over the items
  • Soak for about an hour

What's your goal here? Just visibility? I would personally just try scrubbing it with bar keepers friend and a wet paper towel.

rock tumbler. If u dont have one put some aquarium gravel, some water, a tad of laundry soap in a gator-aide bottle, drop the coin inside, shake the bottle vigorously for 3 min. You will be tired after that, get a cold bev of your choice.... then take the coin out and rise it off. You should see a nice difference.
