I watched a youtube video of a gold prospector who spent like 7 minutes trying to find the nugget and im shouting at the screen co he was digging two feet off to the side....its liks shouting "hes behind you', ever time hed scan and then dig in the wrong place, only finding it by extending the hole gradually.

I prefer to just put the lesche at the 9 oclock of the horseshoe i intend on digging then put the detector down and do a 4" 3/4 horseshoe then flip it, with the small coil (5X8) so im usually right on...only the depth might change depending on the moisture of the soil but another option is chalk to mark if your moving on then going back...you can also use builders blue chalk, that can be dropped from your standing positionfrom the bottle so your not bending unwarrented until you have to

I use a "plastic throwing dart" (the kind of plastic glocks are made of - forget what they call it). If i find out that it is shallow i use the dart to pop the find. i found them on ebay a while back and bought 3 of em. Lost one, broke one - works great.

I do exactly the same thing. Once I have that piece of turf pin pointed with my detector I never take my eyes off that spot. Occasionally I look away for a moment and then I detect it again for the sweet spot. Took a bit of training myself to never look away, but I got the hang of it now. I used to use golf tees but not anymore.

I carry my kneeling/dirt mat folded in half with my leather gloves inside. After I pinpoint the target with my detector I drop the bundle so that a corner of the folded mat is on the target.
Since I have a bad back it saves me from bending over to place a marker, big difference at the end of the day.

Default Just to make you laugh

I started out first with one of my hsband's fancy poker chips when I first got my Tesoro years ago. I thought, wow, how cool. After a target or two I realized it had metal in it!

That's funny. I think we've all made mistakes like that. For instant if my lesche tool is too close by and I start using the pro pointer I will be picking up the lesche more than the target in the hole. A few times I was so concentrated on the hole that I didn't think to move the tool further away. Had me digging into the sides of the hole TOWARD THE LESCHE tool.

Default Water Bottle Caps

At almost every site I search there are the shallow caps off of water bottles. They are about the size of a quarter and are very narrow, maybe having 2 threads. Almost all are white, you don't even have to take them with you they are at almost every site already. It seems most yuppie soccer moms are Litterbugs,,,LOL... GL & HH................Pat

I don't mark the spot. I rub the solid coil over it and it usually makes an impression in the grass or on the bare soil then I just keep my eye on it then dig.

Hey now! . I'm a soccer mom. Why those are all around mostly is when the kiddos run in for a quick drink off the field, we are in a hurry to pop the top for them. I might put it on my lap then forget.

Those are a good use but when you have so many around be careful you remember which one! Lol. If you are picking up garbage as you go, you shouldn't have a problem.

I do like alot of you it seems. I train my eye on the spot looking for a weird piece of grass or marking and if I do look away I find the spot again and this time don't lose it. I don't have a pinpoint on the Compadre and I still can get my plugs down to 3" diameters on shallow targets.

I trained myself to pinpoint more accurately with the golf tees. Got it down to within 2 inch circle if not smaller had to being I use a home made plugger that is 3 inches wide.

I
Usually just swish my toe back and fourth over the pinpointed spot if I have a distraction that way I have a rough guesstimate of location.

I've started doing this, too. I find **lots** of these caps on the ground in parks and tot lots. I try to pick up litter anyway, so I just pocket the caps and use them to mark my signals - they're light, easy to see, non-metallic, and if I lose one there's always plenty more.

visualize first..then take the Pin Pointer+ touch the same exact spot..If I get a beep I dig...If not I dig a 1 inch test plug then hit the hole with the pin pointer again...99% of the time I get a beep doing this..then I dig away!!

If I don't get the beep after the test plug...its over 4 inches down..

I just focus on the spot and dig it. Marking the spot seems unnessary to me.

I use THESE 3-1/4" long plastic golf tees as temporary markers when needed.
