Maybe iron ore. . Looks real similar to some I have. .. mine came from a stream and is discolored

Hard to tell from a photo, but coal that had been burned in a train engine can produce a residue that will read and appears to be magnetic. (At least that is what I have always been told). Yours looks to be one of those. Some refer to them as clinkers.

We do find alot of that near the train tracks. Huge pieces to, heavy as a bowling ball

That's Magnetite...I Have found a lot of that...just found a 3 pound chunk of it on Saturday....Its one form of iron ore
