Found this casing at an early 1900s house with other 45-70 casings, though this is the only one with a stamp. The only other head stamps I've seen have an R, not a C. Just looking for an age range. Any help would be appreciated.

The C designates carbine. The carbine load was also used in cadet rifles. The R or rifle load was what they called in full a 45-70-405. The carbine technically wasn't a 45-70. It was a 45-55-405. Later on they liked the accuracy of the 500 grain bullet better so the rifle was changed to a 45-70-500. The carbine however stayed the same. Later on they dropped the C and R designation because the bullet on the rifle was much longer they were easy to tell the difference and by not stamping C and R anymore they were able to save a little time and money.
