As some of you may remember, I posted about my 6 yr old Golden Retriever, "Junior" back in November. He was vomiting quite a bit one evening, and not acting right the next day. So we took him in to the vet, and after some test's, we found out his liver enzymes had spiked in the 840's. (100 being high). They were not sure if it was viral or bacterial load. So they put him on antibiotics, and after 2 weeks he was feeling fine again. Well 2 days before Christmas he started shaking and not acting right. We took him to the emergency vet clinic. After an overnight stay, and much testing, they have discovered an abscess on or near his liver. 2 Ultrasounds are inconclusive, because they can see the mass, but cannot tell what it is. It is also in an area that they cannot get a biopsy needle in there. After being on more meds for 2 weeks, we are opting for exploratory/removal surgery. Cornell is 1 1/2 hrs from my house, and is one of the best in the country. They also have one of the top liver specialist's on staff. So I am hoping to get him in there early next week. You don't even want to know what this will cost. We have no kids, so our dogs are my wifes babies. Some will understand that. Wish our little guy luck....Curt:grin:

Sorry to hear about your sick dog. I really feel for your family and for your dog. I can understand 100% about doing what is necessary to keep him healthy and going strong. They are family members.

I still have my first dog....my beagle is my little buddy. It makes me physically sick to my stomach to think about something happening to him. He's going to be 10 years old on 2-2-2012. I can NOT imagine what you are going thru. I really hope everything works out. :( stay strong junior!!!! You'll be ok!!!!

Hope your dog comes out ok Curt. I know how attached to them a person can become.

Hope your dog will be fine Curt. I'm sure it will probably cost you a small fortune but its just money, can't put a price on a loved one or a loved pet. Our vet graduated from Cornell and every time he shows up at our farm its money money money. He gets a pretty good stop charge plus $1.00/minute while he is here.

I hope you have good results there. 6 years old is pretty young still. Good luck Junior.

Bless your hearts, all of them and his liver too.
I can relate, my Basset is heading to the vet tomorrow for a two day stay.

We hope all the best for your friend. Our's just turned 14 on Dec. 29th and she's showing her age and has been having some difficulties in the last couple of years. She was our first "baby" since when we got her we were childless and she was eight weeks old. Watching her slowly decline is tough sometimes. Some days she really shows her age and other days she acts like a pup. Luckily she really seems to enjoy the climate here better than what we had in Dallas. Here's our Tinker:

Junior

I will pray for your dog, He is young and will hopefully come through everything just fine. I had 2 dogs I got together about 16 years ago, I have been with my girlfriend 14 years, so they have been our dogs that long. One recently passed away ( A Dalmatian/Rott/Pit mix), They were my best friends. The other a sheepdog is still kicking, he can still walk ok but is blind in one eye and can't get up on his own. He doesn't have a whole lot longer the poor little guy. His passing will really break my girlfriends heart, as did the one that recently passed. I can only hope he passes in his sleep... As you see I know exactly how you feel brother. Again I will pray for you all and hopefully everything will work out...:digginahole:

I hope all goes well for your dog and also for you both who care about him.
We recently adopted a cockapoo from a Humane Society Shelter. What I didn't count on was how attached we have become, and how attached she is to us.
I totally understand.

Aww Curt, so sorry to hear about Junior. Please know you, your wife, and Junior are in my thoughts and prayers.

Gemmy & Cassie (my 14 yr old friend)

Hope they can get it fixed, and it's nothing recurring. 6 years isn't even half way yet, plenty of life left. Usually a good idea to get a new puppy towards the end, they can learn some of your current dog's behavior, also helps keep the older dog active, which helps as well. Helps make the passing a little easier, the toughest part of owning pets, is knowing that you are going to out-live several in your life time, got to enjoy their company while you can.

My black lab, 'Jake', is 4 years 8 months, and still has a lot of puppy in him. I was warned that labs never grow up, but he gets better all the time, always surprises me. He's overly friendly, hasn't shown a hint of agression. Just wish he wasn't such a wanderer and hunter. Seldom comes when I call him, makes me chase him. I know he's playing, because he slows down and lets me catch up, almost... His weakness, is when he finds where another dog marked, got to stop and check it out, leave his special signature.

Wishing Junior the best of luck from my wife and I. Our dog Maggie is like a child to us since our sons are grown, and she listens better too.
