Default Detector Purchase Advice - Locating Pipe etc

Hi Everyone:

I would like to tap into your collective wisdom. After looking around this forum, there is more than I can easily digest.

I am considering purchasing a metal detector. The primary reason is to find a buried cast iron pipe. It has multiple branches and multiple leaks.
Additionally, I periodically lose tractor parts in high grass in a pasture. It would be nice to recover some of them. Finally, I also have two children who may be interested in the hobby aspects of detecting.

Will a metal detector locate a pipe 24" down? How deep can they go?
Will they pick up buried copper wire?

Do you have any suggestions on what, if anything, that may be suitable?

Thanks,

Al

Maybe if the pipe is 24" in diameter.
A wire you're probably looking at 6". Of course it depends on the size of it.

No hobbyist level machine will go to 24 inches . As far as finding metal objects in grass and to say 6-8 ; a lot of detectors will work at very reasonable prices say $300-600 . Look at the Garret and Fisher lines .

Hey Al, Ive traced Romex with a detector up to 12 inches.
As far as pipe, it depends on the size of pipe. The bigger
the pipe in diameter the deeper you will hit on it.

Just recently I traced a 1" 3/4 galvanized pipe at about a foot deep
with my Pinpopinter at MAX sensitivity. The pipe was 2' 1/2 3' down.
I had to pop almost a foot of sod first for the pinpointer to go off.

My observation is to learn how the detector you own functions and responds.

A fisher FX-3 will find the pipes with no issues. I have found pipe about 6" in diameter 4 feet down with the FX-3.

The fisher TW-6 you can clamp on a wire and trace it.

They are utility detectors. Not much fun for the kids.

Whites TM808 will find it. It's large and could still be used to MD.

You need a transmitter / receiver locator that could pound a signal into the ground or direct connect to it.
