I found this little locket yesterday and noticed what looks like rust. Didnt find the chain, but there was a iron signal which i didn’t retrieve as i thought it was a cheapo piece anyways.

I checked for markings and found this “sterling bar” stamp

So is it plated? Fake? Would the chain likely be sterling?

Thanks

Here are the photos.

The good news...I believe it is real silver.
Recently I found this eerily similar locket, thought it was brass junk but it turns out it was solid silver that was also plated with gold.
I figure an early 1900's treasure, these small silver photo lockets might have been a thing back then.

Now the bad news...
That iron signal could have been the chain and if it was it was probably also silver.
Chains come in weird and usually much lower than you think and something that was very thin or had a tiny clasp could easily come in as iron.
Years ago this silver one did for me.

The rust is from a spring in the latch..

Congrats on the sterling locket.. The chain is likely silver too, chains ring up really low..

Well, the chain was rusted away mostly, but I did a short hunt and found some other interesting items.

The park is fairly new so I imagine the square nail, 59 nickel and 66 dime may have been dropped when this was a farm field. There was also some copper tubing I didn't get in the picture.
