I don't live in or near a part of town with sidewalk especially old enough to be torn out but, I do live where there is a lot of overhead utilities being buried. Theres not a lot of older houses along that stretch of road but is the road itself a good enough draw to detect the area?
 
If people have traveled it, they've dropped stuff. I don't think there will be much uncovered to detect though, if they bury the lines like they do here. Here they use a machine that tunnels flex pipe under the surface that spans a long ways before having to come up again.

This work is being done prior to the widening of the road so they'll just dig for the sake of speed, no need to keep it purdy
