I hunted a place that goes back to the 1600's. I found a couple of buttons and I was wondering if anyone might be able to date them. This first one is about the size of a quarter:

Here's the back:

I also found two identical smaller buttons; much smaller than a dime:

Thanks!

Nice job on the buttons Joe! I am very limited on buttons but they do look pretty old. Nice to see you are getting out.

Hi Joe - As the first button = I have a lot of CW buttons and they all do not have the raised mound and then the loop on the back. The loop is just attached to the button.
The second button is more like the CW era ones.
Without detail on the front it's hard to tell what it might be. And my opinion is not the final word - just my experience in Az. Steve in so az

Hey Joe...as Steve said, hard to tell....but I do know that the second button is a one piece with the loop braised on, and it's the older of the two.

The second one is a two-piece variety with the loop inserted into the hollow raised area and then braised...at least that's my understanding...

I'd say the second is late 17's early 1800's and the first one early 1800's. I believe most Civil War buttons are 3pc...front, back, and ring attaching both pieces. Either way, great finds and thanks for sharing!

Steve and Hank,

Thanks so much for your input. I've been trying to research buttons in general but most detailed info appears to be in books. I did find a website that showed some colonial buttons and the 2nd one looked just like it. I'll be heading back to that site Saturday with my new hunting buddy

I have had thousands of these.

They are standard pewter type dating from 1790s - 1830s.
