Maybe Buckle?

I found this on my very first dig.
It has 'PAT DEC16 1878 (6?)' on the back.
Any ideas?

Piccy is a bit fuzzy but its definatley a buckle of some sort,i will have a look in one of my books,,maybe i can come up with something.Can you try another pic (in focus) and another of the other side of it

I need to take another pic which I will do this weekend, I think it is a buckle from a horse's harness but not sure.

thanks anyway....I was told that it is probably a horse harness buckle...

Thats more than likely a good assumption,off a bridle or harness.
