I have been using a whites bullseye II for a short while and it does exactly what I want it to do, let's me know when I'm close(on top of the target) and it has a vibrate mode when I am in state parks which requires silent operation.
I bought a pistol probe thinking I would want more depth for surface pinpointing and flipping coins within a few inches of the surface vs digging a hole. The pistol probe definitely has a lot more depth than the bullseye but on the downside you don't know how close you are unless you turn down the threshold. What about quiet operation, put some tape over the speaker, I don't care for the LED indicator.
What techniques do you when using the pistol probe?
