Won a box of odds and ends at an auction today and down at the bottom was this neat little piece. Its encased in some sort of glass or heavy Plexiglas.
Can you tell if its real? If so how much is it worth?
The coin appears to be in mint state condition, the scratches that you see are on the glass. The glass itself feels and looks pretty old. Thanks

Looks real to me, not sure of the age but lots of these sold as paperweights on ebay for @ $40.

Looks real to me. Put some dry ice on it for a few minutes then smack it with a hammer , once its liberated from the plastic you should be able to tell for sure.

Yes most likely the coin is real. It's unlikely someone produced a fake common year then to put it in acrylic. This was pretty common to put older silver coins in acrylic in various shapes, even toilet seats. The coins were usually heavily cleaned/polished before encasing to make them shiny, thus damaging the coin. But cleaning silver coins used to be an acceptable practice some time ago. Not the case today.
