Hey everyone, since I messed my hand up I haven't been able to go out metal detecting. Been getting cabin fever pretty bad so yesterday me and Kitty sorted through her box of cash register finds. It was actually a ton of fun and made me think about coin roll hunting.

Because I don't have a bunch of cash I'm thinking about hunting pennies and or nickles.

Does it make a difference if I buy a case or just a few rolls at a time?

Any tips at all would be much appreciated!!

OH! and I should mention that Kitty had some real cool stuff in her box. A pretty good pile of silvers as well as a 1893 IH penny and a buffalo nickle that looks almost brand new.

Maxbet! Congrats on joining CRHers! LOL I would suggest you buy by the box. Remember, the more coins you look through, the better your chances of finding some goodies! At least with nickels you have a chance of getting some silvers! Don't get discouraged early if you don't find something right away....patience and perservrance pay off when it comes to CRHing!

Best of luck!

I suggest dimes, $5 a roll and really easy to see a silver from the side. And I've had the most luck (major newbie) with dimes. Happy hunting!

Cool! Thanks for the tips and kind words! I got paid today and will be sure to keep you guys updated on how it goes :)

Thanks FallGuy, that looks like something I could definitely use!

I started with small with 20 bucks in nickels, I was searching specifically for war nickels and buffalo nickels.

No success there, oldest nickel was 1957 and went back to the bank with the rest of them.

Being immediately hooked I returned to the bank to get some halves, the teller informed me that they had no halves and that people order cases "but always return them because there's never anything" lol.

SO I bought a hundred in quarters. To me it looks like they had already been hunted through because the oldest quarter was 1965 and I found NINE OF THEM. Only keeper was one of the 1976 bicentennials. (I know it's not worth anything but I like it)

Today I'm headed to a different bank with the intention of getting 200 bucks in halves.

If they don't have halves I'll get dimes.

Hey maxbet, in my opinion I would avoid looking through the quarters and focus on dimes or nickels if the halves don't work out for you. The silver quarters are so picked through already they're really hard to find now, but that's just been my experience with it! I hope you find some great stuff, good luck!

Thanks for the advice Arrowhead, I went through two cases of dimes this weekend.

Only "score" was a 1997 five pence.

Oddest thing though, I didn't realize that banks around here won't take unrolled coin. I ended up cashing my dimes at an indian casino because I didn't feel like rolling a zillion dimes.

I assumed they would have had coin machines but after going to three different Wells Fargos and a Bank of America I gave up and took a trip to the casino.

Oh well! I'm going to pick up some more coins after work today I think.

If you are strictly after Silver I would search halves and/or dimes. It's usually quite easy to search by looking at the sides of the rolls with halves and dimes. Just be advised some really dirty coins can be deceiving. I didn't have the time or want to to look at every date. That was just me, but some folks on here do that.

Nickels can be fun but for me it got too time-consuming trying to read the dates. I did put together a Jefferson set from '38-whenever my Whitman book ended I think 1962 (minus the 1950-D, of course).

Look around and see what banks are in your area, you are bound to find a couple with coin machines. Sign up with one and make that bank your dump bank only. Make sure to spread your dumps out with different branches though, as you might end up pissing off your dump bank. Also never take coins back to the bank you received them from.

Good luck!

Tip on hunting halves.....don't depend on edge hunting to do you any good on 40%ers....they often show bicolored metal which will fool the beginning CRHer. Check those dates...they are easy to read and the coins are easy to handle. Besides when hunting dates you may come across Proofs and commemeratives, or the scarce 1987!

40%ers are the years 65-70....70 being very scarce cause they only were made in special sets, not for general circulation.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone! I found out where the casino I work at deposits their coin machine bags so I'm going to head over there on Wednesday and buy as many halves as I possibly can!

Yea dimes and halves are your best chance at silver. Even if you hit silver searching nickels, the silver composition is 35% and they are only worth about $1 +/-.

a quick update:

I've become hopelessly addicted to hunting dimes and am starting to get sour looks when I show up at the dump bank 2 or 3 times a day.

Unfortunately haven't been keeping track of the quantities I've gone through but it's been at least a couple grand.

So far I've found 4 war nickels and 8 silver rosies. Also a shirt button, a singapore dime, israeli sheqel, british nickle and a couple assorted canadians. (I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow afternoon)

No luck on the halves but they're a little rich for my blood anyway.

I want to ask, what is the point in CRHing? I know your hunting silver coins(I'm assuming they are worth money), but what are the general values, and how do you get money for them?

I think the point for alot of people is just to find silver and stash it to be passed down or cashed in at some point in the future. It can be a decent investment I suppose, basically I paid $1.20 (face value) for 16 bucks in silver (melt value)... I'm pretty bad at math but that's.... what... like 1300% profit?

I do it just because I like it, I put my finds in a jar and keep whatever coins I want wether they're modern foreign coins, or just old or weird things. Don't really have a goal in mind, I just keep the stuff I like so I can look at it and feel satisfied lol

Alot of people CRH looking to complete their coin collections, look for errors, key dates, silver or whatever.
