Thanks for the info!! I need to find a DEEP, old silver dime, with no iron in the hole, to make sure I am doing this correct!! ( only deep dimes HAD rusted iron also, and single silver dime was pretty shallow, less than 6 inches. )

If you go in all metal mode (quick mask) You can swipe back and forth over the target and if FE stays above 20 you know you are experiencing halo from rust. If it bounces down to 10 or twelve more often than just on occasion, it's probably a good signal.

Long and smooth can be confusing in the beginning. Normal is good to start with but so is pitch hold...it's tones are not confusing and you get the added advantage of the detector remembering what you last scanned (via background tone). I found it to be even less confusing than normal because of this added feature.
