Went out metal detecting today. Thought I had found a 1/2 dollar, but when I got home I realized it wasn't. On the front there is a face looking to the left. The date is below the face. I think I see a ?83?. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Two of the pictures show it next to a quarter. The third is of it by itself.

Is this a coin I can try to clean? If Yes - how would I clean it?

You can try the hot peroxide bath. It will loosen the dirt. After a few minutes pull it out and lightly rub with soft tooth brush. rinse and repeat if needed. Heat peroxide fo 45 to 60 sec in microwave remove then drop coin in.

I would not use the hot peroxide bath on such a great find. Just drop it in plain olive oil and check it every couple of days. As the dirt becomes loose, pick at it with a toothpick. It will take a while but the results will be worth the wait!

Nice LC....love them coppers...use the olive oil method...

I would check out Goes4ever's web site and follow his cleaning methods. I have been finding lots of early 1800s coppers and they come out great using his methods. No peroxide, no oil.
Congrats on a nice find!

If it were me I'd take a tooth pick and very easy scrape the dirt off
Then a toothbrush and water and a light scrubbing........That's all..........HH
