These are confusing??? I have been all over the google etc... am finding these diamond testers... for as little as 8-9 bucks and to well over 200.00.

Found one that is being sold for 22 bucks... on one site, with over 30 reviews and rated 4 plus stars... same one on another site, for over 250.00????

What gives?

Are these 10-20 dollar diamond testers with great reviews worth a darn?

How can they be 20 bucks, when others are 90.00 etc etc...

Any of ya'll have any experience with this stuff and can say, they bought a cheap one and it worked, or they bought the cheap one and it didn't?

Here are some as an example:

The last on, I found the same thing at a jewelers site for over $200.00???

But at site I listed... about 22 bucks? What gives?

(Here is the site that seems to have the same one (?) for over 2 bills?) :

P.S. I know this has been asked before, but this is the first time I saw the same two, name, photo etc,... have such a price variance... how come? Again, the last link, can be bought for over 200 or for around 20 bucks - whats up with that? Thanks.

Like anything else you have real units and then you have Chinese knockoffs.
The cheap Culti units are knock-offs of Japanese units that cost closer to $100.
That Japanese co has a website that compares the 2.

Also there are so many sites that have the same units but charge different prices.

Supposedly most of them work, even the cheap ones, but there are quality differences.

Steve in so AZ has this one and says it is a good one.
I would tend to believe him since he probably has found a few rocks.

Update

Howdy, I know its been a while, but figured I'd update my own thread, lol.

Bought a Presidium Gem Tester a few days back, and am pretty satisfied with the thing. It has passed the tests I put it through with some known rocks that I have... from fake to real, etc.

If you do get one though, they can be a bit fragile, in that the metal tip is real thin etc... also, when you pull off the tip cap, be sure you hold onto the gold metal portion of the "pen" so you don't pull it off the tip... can be tricky to reseat... I did that already, lol.

The Gem Tester, goes for around 2 bills... but, I figured nothing ventured, nothing gained... and got lucky.... I made a few calls to a bunch a Pawn Shops (I know, I know, lol)... and found one that actually had one! The good news is... got them to part with it for a $100.00 out the door. I know, they probably paid 20, lol, but I can't complain that it was on 100.

I think they may have thought they had the one that is a diamond tester only, that one sells for about 129.00 new.... but the one I bought from them sells for 199-229.00 new.

It looks and works great! Tested it with them, in store, on several stones, and especially real and fake diamonds (it does NOT test for the MOS stone though)...

All in all, I really like it... but it also has its down side... sigh...

A few of my larger earrings with huge honkin diamonds, yup.... fake. Sigh.... stupid machine!!! Lol.

Anyways, This is the one I bought, from, of all places, a pawn shop....

Might be worth looking into...

So, just an update. (-;

Diamond Tester

AZWIP, Hi there. About your post concerning your confusion about diamond testers. I clicked on the Amazon loop you provided, recorded the info and then went to YouTube and typed; "diamond tester tutorials". My opinion, the tester on Amazon for around 29 bucks is legit. I watched several videos of that particular tester being used and am going to buy one myself. I also saw "The Gambler" Darrel S on Storage Wars using what looked like the same one. Gonna buy one myself. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, hopefully our findings will help others trying to get a gem/diamond tester. There are soooooo many. Lol.

Thanks again. Now, just to find even bigger diamonds, lol.

I had a few large, carat or better earrings I had found... and lo and behold... not diamonds. But, the good news is, the gold rings I found, did test as diamonds... too bad on the large earrings though. :p
